JULY

YVONNE KELEHER

KELEHER YvonneJanuary 31, 1964 - July 21, 2024

Yvonne Mary Keleher, a beacon of love and laughter, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2024, in Edmonton, Alberta, succumbing to sepsis at the age of 60.

Born on January 31, 1964, in Toronto, Ontario, Yvonne's life was a tapestry woven with the threads of joy, intellect, and an unwavering spirit of generosity. Yvonne's early years in Toronto were filled with the warmth of a close-knit family. She was the cherished daughter of Francis Martin and the late James Martin, and a beloved sister to Nancy Brown. Her formative years were marked by a lively household that brimmed with love and humor, qualities that Yvonne carried into her own family life. She found her life partner in Dave Keleher, whose companionship and support were her stronghold. Together, they nurtured a family that included Yvonne's pride and joy, her son Alex van Elst, her treasured daughter-in-law Carolyn, and her stepson Graham Keleher, who she embraced as her own.

Yvonne's educational journey at Grant Macewan College culminated in a degree in Teacher's Aid, a field where she flourished professionally. Her dedication to children's education and well-being was evident through her longstanding career with the Edmonton Catholic School Board, where she touched the lives of many students and colleagues with her intelligence and wit. Beyond her professional life, Yvonne's passions were manifold. She had an insatiable appetite for garage sales and craft markets, always on the lookout for hidden treasures and handcrafted delights. Her infectious laughter often filled the room as she engaged in games with friends and family, creating moments of joy that are now cherished memories. Described by those who knew her as loving, funny, and intelligent, Yvonne's presence was a gift to all. Her humor was a source of constant entertainment, and her intelligence made her a natural problem-solver and a wise confidante. But above all, it was her loving nature that made her the heart of her family. Her mother, Francis, her sister, Nancy, and her nephews and niece—Garrett Block, Jason, Nicole, and Kevin Brown—will hold dear the legacy of her love.

As we bid farewell to Yvonne, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and joy. Her spirit, a guiding light for her family, will continue to shine in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Yvonne's journey on earth may have concluded, but the stories of her kindness, her laughter, and her love will be recounted for generations. We honor the memory of Yvonne Mary Keleher, a woman of remarkable character, and we take solace in knowing that her legacy will be everlasting. Though she has departed from this world, the essence of who she was remains with us, a comforting presence in the fabric of our lives.

Edmonton Catholic Schools extends sincere condolences to Yvonne's family and friends. May her soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 3rd, at 2:00 PM in St. Albert Funeral Home, 9 Muir Drive, St. Albert.

Gerry continued her postsecondary education to complete her first-year teacher training at l'École Normale in Nicolet, PQ, and later received a B.Ed. degree from the University of Calgary in 1969.

Maria Germaine Yvette Rappel

Gerry worked as a teacher at the Calgary Catholic School District for most of her career. She continued her professional development by completing studies toward a master's degree in Romance Studies at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, and at the University of Calgary. Gerry returned to Edmonton in 1982 and taught at the Edmonton Catholic School Division until her retirement in 1993. As an educator, Gerry was a much-loved teacher and valued colleague. In 2004, Gerry became a beloved member of the Secular Franciscan Order at St. Mary's Fraternity in Calgary. In lieu of flowers and following the spirit of St. Francis, Gerry would have appreciated personal approaches of making an offering for God's gift of life:
Love this precious life - every minute of it. Be open to wonder and beauty and mystery. Be a lover of the world, of starry nights and hot summer days, of music and wind in the trees and the laughter of children. Love life so much you feel pain when it is denied elsewhere. Love it so much you are hurt when people are oppressed, discriminated against, hungry, cold, poor. Love life enough to get angry when it is taken for granted. Love life by investing in it - by giving some of yourself to your church, or synagogue, or political party, or community.

Edmonton Catholic Schools extends sincere condolences to Gerry's family and friends. May her soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace.

FEBRUARY

TERRY MISKEW

MISKEW Terry

March 23, 1942 – February 29, 2024

It is with great sadness that the Miskew family announce the passing of Terry Miskew, a beloved husband, father, and Gido. Terry left us peacefully, at the age of 81, leaving behind Judy, wife of 60 years; children, Lee (Carol), Stacy, Dawn (Shaun Langlois); grandchildren Morgan and Ivan Miskew, Natalia and Nicholas Langlois. He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Jean Miskew and sister, Marcia Palichuk.

In 1968, Terry completed his Bachelor of Education at the University of Alberta and began teaching with Edmonton Catholic Schools as an Assistant Principal at Father Lacombe Elementary. He continued his journey as an Assistant Principal at St. Michael Elementary in 1970. That year an amazing opportunity to teach abroad for the Department of Defense came to Terry’s attention, so Terry and Judy moved to West Germany for a year where Terry taught grade 6 at Lahr Westend School in Lahr, Germany. When they returned home, Terry returned to St. Michael for another year before moving to St. Basil Elementary/Junior High as the Assistant Principal. After one year, he was promoted to Principal for the 1974/75 school year. Terry’s next stop was Principal at St. Thomas More Junior High until 1977.

In September 1977, Terry transferred to what became his second home – St. Philip Elementary. Over the summers of 1980-82, Terry took his family with him to Portland, Oregon where he worked hard to achieve his Masters’ Degree in Educational Administration at the University of Portland in 1982. Terry was fortunate to be able to stay at St. Philip for the rest of his career, a full 20 years, until his retirement in June 1997. The amazing people that worked there - teachers, custodians, and everyone in between, helped create a family atmosphere and memories that Terry cherished until the end, and the family will remember forever. Throughout his time with ECSD, Terry served on numerous committees like the Catholic Education Council, ATA, College of Principals Executive, and many more.

PATRICK MACDONALD

MacDonald Patrick 2006July 22, 1940 – December 26, 2023

ECSD has lost a treasure in the untimely death of Patrick James MacDonald. Patrick died in hospital after a brief illness.

Patrick served the Edmonton Catholic School District faithfully for over 30 years beginning in 1971. He was a teacher, counselor, and theologian who, on the day he presented the 8 Characters of Catholic Education, received a standing ovation from all in attendance. That response was because Patrick embodied those characters in every aspect of his life.

Patrick had a keen mind which was fed by a lifelong love of reading and a deep appreciation for the shared wisdom he believed the authors had bestowed on him. His sense of humour was contagious, and his smile and laughter filled any room he entered.

When he retired, he accepted the invitation to run as trustee and with no surprise won the election. At the trustee table he represented all employees in the district and was deeply concerned for our welfare and success. He worked tirelessly to enact the principle of subsidiarity in the district’s decisions so that those affected by those decisions should be included in the decision-making process – a principle at the heart of our mandate as Catholic educators to serve the poor and marginalized.

Anyone who had the pleasure to work with him and to enjoy his presence will agree with this comment: He has made an indelible impression on us all; we have been graced to know and love him. May the memory of him continue to inspire and bring us joy.

SANDY ASKIN

On April 9, 2022 heaven gained an earthly angel. Our dear beautiful mom finally attained the peace she so deserved after suffering immensely for over 14 years from what was diagnosed as dementia. May she rest well in the afterworld from now until eternity in the loving embrace of her beloved husband of 51 years, our dear dad, Kenny Askin. Sandy has and continues to be mourned deeply by her two devoted daughters: Holly (Greg) Mailo, Ginger (Darrell) Friesen, and her four cherished grandchildren: Hunter, Harleigh, Hope, and Sadie. Sandy is predeceased by her husband, Kenny Askin, her loving mom Marian Newman, her dad, James Richardson, and by her brother Ricky Richardson.

Sandy dedicated over 25 years of service to the Edmonton Catholic School Division as an elementary school secretary and as a teacher's aide at St Monica and St. Mary Catholic Schools. She was a devoted wife, a selfless mother, a proud grandma, a wonderful daughter, a fabulous sister and sister in law, a caring cousin, a generous auntie, a thoughtful niece, a hardworking employee, a supportive colleague, a committed volunteer, a loyal friend, and an incredibly kind, compassionate gentle soul and amazing pianist. Sandy leaves behind an amazing legacy of love. Family was her first love and number one priority. She spent decades as a sensational hostess, hosting friends and family at her lake cabin at SeBa beach as well as countless family dinners, talent nights, celebrating any and every occasion that life had to offer. She was known for her positive outlook on life, her love of children, her infatuation with Elvis, her infectious laugh, her crazy toy poodles, her elegance and grace, her sense of style, her fantastic sense of humor, and her strong sense of morality.Despite a clear personal directive, an inherent disconnect exists that prevented her wishes, which were to be kept comfortable, from being honoured.

We love you forever mom xo

Please join us for a candlelight celebration of life for this beautiful human being whom we are most privileged to call our mom on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. at Memories Funeral Home, 13403 St. Albert Trail Edmonton.

Jules began his 35-year career as a teacher, then principal, with Edmonton Catholic Schools. Ever musical, a highlight for Jules was travelling around the country with his school choir, bringing joy to appreciative audiences. The practice of the Catholic faith was important to Jules. This was especially true in his dedication to helping his students understand and live their faith through music and action. His passion for music was continued with his and Carol's participation in the Les Chantamis Choir for many years.

Together with Carol, they exchanged memorable words and shook hands warmly, definitely a moment to savour.

For 12 years, Jules held the position of Supreme Council Ceremonial Coordinator and Chairman of the Father McGivney Guild. During his numerous years of service within the Knights of Columbus, Jules and Carol travelled to many parts of the world for conventions where they renewed ties with old and new friends. With his active participation and his love of the Order of the Knights of Columbus, Jules has influenced, mentored and supported the efforts of his fellow knights as they strive to improve the lives of people worldwide.

After retiring, Jules and Carol spent 24 winters in Yuma, Arizona as snowbirds. Together they enjoyed golfing, square dancing, and socializing in the Arizona sun. They travelled and cruised extensively through Asia, Australia, Europe and South America. Travel was an experience that opened up the world to Jules. He loved travelling with family and friends. Trying new foods, special cocktails and enjoying the diverse cultures made him very happy.

Jules fully embraced life and loved people. Having an optimistic outlook, he lived life to the fullest on the golf course, at church, at meetings and at the coffee shop. Jules was always ready to entertain his friends with a quote, a story or a poem.

After retiring, Larry remained very busy in his neighborhood with grass cutting in the summer and snow removal in the winter. HENRY RAKOWSKI

It is with great sadness that the family of Henry Rakowski announce his passing on November 27, 2021, at the age of 87. Beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather of Jeanette (Joe) and their children Tom (Angela), Jill (Brett), David and grandchildren Jordyn, Addie and Dillon, of Harold (Lynn) and their children Kevin (Danielle), Sam (Meghan), Alex (Diva) and grandchildren Kennedie and Jackson and of Joanne (David) and their children Bobbi (Sean) and Kristen and cherished brother to Richard, Albert (Malva), Sabina (Peter) and Louise. Henry is predeceased by his loving wife Helen and his dear sisters Elizabeth and Carol.

Henry was born in Radway, Alberta on April 15, 1934, and grew up on a farm nearby. It is here that his masterful skills in gardening, hunting, fishing, his love of country music and his uncanny connection to nature were nurtured. After attending the University of Alberta Henry took his first teaching position, in a one room schoolhouse, in Wandering River, Alberta. He continued his teaching career in Edmonton, shortly thereafter becoming a principal and retiring after thirty six years of being a gifted educator. He built his life in Edmonton marrying his beloved Helen, raising their three children Jeanette, Harold, and Joanne, seeing his children marry and have children of their own, witnessing the love of grandchildren and greatgrandchildren and forming many close friendships along the way. Henry was a spiritual man with a deep faith and was involved in church activities throughout his life. Family and friends were everything to Henry and he will be dearly missed by all.

Anyone who met Henry could attest to his remarkable ability to connect with people, young and old alike, and to the countless special moments he shared with friends and family. His all encompassing enthusiasm for life was legendary and his interests were many. He shared his passions with all who crossed his path. Whether it was growing the biggest tomato, hunting moose in Whitecourt, planting a garden at Lake Isle, entering into a moose calling contest, deciding to become a taxidermist, teaching hunter training courses, canning home grown vegetables from the garden, frying up a freshly caught fish, playing a Johnny Cash tune on the guitar, lighting fireworks at the lake for grandchildren, making a myriad of Inukshuks, taking countless people for a ride on the Argo, creating a desert full of treasures for grandchildren to discover or just having a happy hour drink or two with others, Henry approached every encounter, activity and person with unbridled passion and joy. He “led the charge” for living life to the fullest and we will deeply miss our guiding star.

The family would like to extend thanks to the staff at Waterford of Summerlea Seniors Residence for making Henrys’ ten year stay there so wonderful. BARBARA KENWELL

Barbara Anne Zarowny (Kenwell) was born to Annie Zarowny on August 12, 1956 in Victoria, BC. Most of her childhood was spent at the family farm outside Westlock, Alberta and the family homestead outside of Elk Point, Alberta, where she enjoyed growing up alongside her younger sister Sandi, many aunts and uncles and many,  many cousins.

Barb studied at the University of Alberta, where she achieved a degree in child developmental psychology. She went on to find her passion, working with developmentally challenged children with the Edmonton Catholic School Board. She had a long and enjoyable career, working with many memorable children and making lasting friendships with coworkers. She also had a passion for volunteering with youth, and worked with Beavers, Cubs and Scouts with Scouts Canada most of her adult life.

Barb is survived by her daughter, Niki, and sister Sandi. She was “Auntie Barb or Tante Barb” to many, including two nephews (Aaron and Ian), a great niece (Violet) and great nephew (Lincoln). Barb was predeceased by her partner Art and maintained a lasting relationship with his granddaughter Amber and her children Serenity and Maddie, who always held a special place in her heart. She was loved and will be missed by many.

Barbara joined Edmonton Catholic Schools in 1979 as a teacher assistant, or developmental aide as it was called. She served many of our schools, including St. Gabriel, St. Vladimir, St. Mark, Archbishop O'Leary, and Austin O'Brien, until her retirement in 2017. HECTOR POIRIER

A Celebration of Life will take place for Hector Poirier on July 14, 2022 at the Hilton Doubletree Edmonton West (16615 109 Avenue NW, Edmonton AB).

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our dad, grandpa, great grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend to many, Hector Poirier, who passed away on Friday, September 24, 2021 at the age of 89. Hector is predeceased by his loving wife Dorothy; his brother Marcel (Vimmy); four of his sisters, Tootsie (Joe), Emma (Gordon), Florence (Fred), Julie (Reg); his son-in-law Kent; and his mother and father, Gladys and Louis. He is survived by his sister Bella (Ben, deceased); his brother in law Fred (Mila); his daughters, Carmen, Nancy, Suzanne, Wendy (Mark) and Paulette; along with his grandchildren Ashley, Alexa (Rod), Joel, Ty, Clayton, Paige, Luc, Adjani and Emani; his great grandchildren Savannah and Arissa; and many nieces and nephews.

Hector began his life on a homestead in Cold Lake, Alberta where, with his French Canadian roots, he learned to work hard on the farm and play harder at the rink or on the lake. Hector always found the time to socialize and laugh with his extended family and friends.

As a young man Hector chose to spread his wings, literally, as he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and became a navigator on CF-100 jet fighters. While stationed in St. Hubert, Quebec, he met Dorothy, whose zest for life matched his own, and they were married in August of 1957. After leaving the Air Force due to the cancellation of the Avro Arrow project, Hector and Dorothy settled in Edmonton where they raised their five girls and taught school.

Hector had a long career in education that began in a one room school in Fort McMurray. He became the principal of a string of elementary schools across west Edmonton starting at Our Lady of Victories, moving to Notre Dame, Good Shepherd, and ending his career at Holy Cross – a large French Immersion school spanning kindergarten to 9th grade. Even after long days of teaching young children, Hector always found plenty of time to spend with Dorothy and the five girls and to take the whole gang on epic trips from Cold Lake to Cape Breton to Jamaica – with lots of stops in between.

Hector served his church and his community as well, as a member of Paroisse Ste. Anne and Annunciation Catholic Church and as an active member of The Knights of Columbus.

Hector touched many people’s hearts and shaped many minds as he passed through this life. He nurtured the curiosity of young students and shared his good humor and laughter with all. We love you, we miss you, we salute you.

A Celebration of Life will take place for Hector Poirier on July 14, 2022 at the Hilton Doubletree Edmonton West (16615 109 Avenue NW, Edmonton AB).

MARCH

BUD DALTON

It is with heavy hearts we announce that Bud passed away quietly in the early hours of Sunday, March 14, 2021 at the age of 89.

Bud was a devoted husband and leaves behind his wife Anne of 63 years. His children: daughters Jan Nesbitt (Paul), Anita Dalton (Ken Nielsen), sons Andy Dalton (Karen), Mike Dalton (Shani), Jeff Dalton. His Grandchildren: Tom, Katie (Kyle), Dalton (Jessie), Jess, Karli, Beau (Tessa), Lauren, Rachel and Andrew. His Great Grandchildren: Graydon and Kaia.

Dad was born in Sydney, Cape Breton Nova Scotia on October 15, 1931. The youngest of 8 children born to Ronald and Margaret Dalton. He graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, NS with a degree in Education and not long after married our Mother Anne. A few years later, with Jan and Andy in tow they packed up their VW and headed West. Dad had a teaching job in Ashmont, Alberta where they settled in for a few years, having a second son Mike. Eventually settling in Edmonton for many years adding a second daughter, Anita and third son Jeff to the Dalton Gang.

He had the best long time group of friends and he was good to stay in touch with them as well as he and mom’s siblings back East, whether betting on football, hockey or just checking in. He played baseball and hockey well into his 60’s, enjoyed golf – especially the “Dalton Open” we all played for several years. . . . . we usually caught him cheating but never said a word. He rarely turned down a game of crib and spent more than a few afternoons at the casino.

He was a wonderful Father. He did his best to create memories for us, taking us back to his beloved Cape Breton for the summer, camping trips to BC and many summers spent at Muriel Lake, where he taught us all to water-ski, but not to swim!

Dad taught in rural Alberta until the bond of friendship (Vince Isaac) brought him to the Edmonton Catholic School System, most of his years as a high school principal until his retirement in 1987. He and mom then enjoyed travel to Mexico, Arizona, Hawaii, several cruises, and eventually made the move to Kelowna in 1990. He loved music and to dance with mom.

He has struggled over the last several years with his health and we have never known anyone who could tough it out like he could. Whenever he went to KGH, the nurses usually remarked he was their favorite patient – let’s be honest, he buttered them up in order to receive extra attention.

We cannot thank the staff at Glenmore Lodge (Magpie) enough for the amazing care you provided our Father and will continue to provide our Mother. The compassion you showed us all in these final days is appreciated so much.

Due to local restrictions, no service will be planned at this time. Arrangements entrusted with Everden Rust Funeral Services Kelowna.

Cyril joined Edmonton Catholic Schools in 1963 as a teacher at St. James. He became an assistant principal and was assigned to Mt. Carmel in 1965. He went on to serve St. Mark, Austin O'Brien and St. Mary, before becoming principal at Archbishop MacDonald in 1971. In 1977 he became principal at St. Nicholas and remained until his retirement in 1987. Edmonton Catholic Schools extends sincere condolences to Cyril's family and friends. May his soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace.

JOSEPH HARACSI

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dad, on March 5, at the age of 92 years.

Dad will be greatly missed by his seven children: Sandi Chalmers, JoAnn Anderson (Ron), Bob (Trudy), Lori, Susie (Joe) Rotella, Gerry (Sandra), Alyson (Kevin) Krzanstek; thirteen grandchildren; ten great- grandchildren; and other extended family, all of whom he loved so dearly.

Dad was predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years, Rita; parents, Joseph and Julia Haracsi; sisters, Isabelle, Helen, Irene; son-in-law, Richard Chalmers.

Dad had a huge influence in the lives of many. Whether it be as a teacher, coach, volunteer or friend, he truly believed in reaching out, helping others and imparting his unbounding knowledge. Dad loved our mom so much and his greatest accomplishment in life was his family. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought dad the most joy. Dad was so proud of his family. Words cannot fully express the deep loss we all feel. We love you Gumby.

A Funeral Mass will be announced once more restrictions are lifted. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made on behalf of his loving wife to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta, 10430 61 Avenue, Edmonton, AB T6H 2J3.To send condolences, please visit www.connelly-mckinley.com.

NOVEMBER

BOB KORYCKI

Korycki-Bob.jpg

It is with profound sadness that we announce Bob's passing on November 27, 2020, due to Lewy Body Dementia. He leaves behind his loving wife Joan, son Ben, daughter Jayne, son-in-law Ronny, and his two cherished grand-children Mia and Noah. He also leaves three sisters: Patricia Poston (Cully), Carolyn Mlieczko (Louis), Valerie Gerenscer, and three brothers: Jim (Connie), Jack (Tina), Chris (Danette), as well as his mother-in-law Margaret Gangl and family.

Bob had a long and rewarding career as a school counselor, classroom teacher, and vice-principal. He especially enjoyed working with junior high students. He was also a skilled painter and worked for many summers with his long time friends and faithful painting crew.

In his retirement years, Bob kept busy working on various building projects, refinishing furniture, building and flying remote control airplanes, only to name a few. But above all others, his favorite hobby and passion was fishing!

I've finished life's chores assigned to me,

So put me on a boat headed out to sea.

Please send along my fishing pole

For I've been invited to the fishin' hole.

Where every day is a day to fish,

To fill your heart with every wish.

Don't worry, or feel sad for me,

I'm fishin' with the Master of the sea.

We will miss each other for awhile,

But you will come and bring your smile.

That won't be long you will see,

Till we're together you and me.

To all of those that think of me,

Be happy as I go out to sea.

If others wonder why I'm missin'

Just tell 'em that I've gone fishin'

Our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 23, 2020, just short of her 98th birthday. For the last nine years, Mary was in full-time care due to physical limitations, but her mind remained sharp to the end.

Having lived through the upheavals of WWII, the decision was made to leave Budapest, Hungary and seek out a better life for her family in Canada. Mary raised five children while pursuing an education degree at university. Her fluency in four languages was a valuable asset while studying and later for her teaching career.

After retiring from teaching, she dedicated her time to her grandchildren as well as spending many hours doing charitable works in the community. She was very close to the Sisters of Providence and a long-time member of the Providence Associates. Mary was especially involved with the Social Justice Committee where she was able to actively engage in issues that were important to her. Mary was a keen historian and archeology enthusiast. She loved reading murder mystery novels until her failing eyes no longer allowed her that pleasure. She enjoyed swimming and keeping active. Mary truly lived a life of grace and now rests in the arms of the Lord.

Mary is survived by her five children; Charles (Christine), Christopher (Janet), Nicholas (Patricia Cleary-Stuart), Rita Altrogge, Janet (Russ McFall), her nine grandchildren: Leslie Stuart, James Stuart (Liz Andrew), Sydney Stuart (Radley Wiebe), Samantha Stuart, Meghan Johnson, Mark Altrogge (Kristin Altrogge), Joanna Buker (David Buker), Erika Gulewich (Michael Gulewich), Greg Altrogge (Beth Richardson), and ten great- grandchildren: Max and Grady Wiebe, Ava and Joel Johnson, Emily and Leah Altrogge, Madeline and Benjamin Buker, Calvin and Emmett Gulewich, as well as extended family in Hungary. Mary was predeceased by her son-in-law Paul Altrogge.

9037-stella shewchuk.jpg

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Stella Sylvia Shewchuk, of St. Albert, AB, on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at the age of 77 years. Angrove, as well as many family members and an abundance of friends. She was preceded by her daughter Sherry Lynn Shewchuk and her parents Fred and Olga Hryniuk.

Stella grew up in Prud'homme, Sask. where her mother and father owned a hotel. She was the third child of five. Stella became inspired to be a teacher by 9 years old and quickly accomplished her dream soon after high school. Her ambition of teaching in a one room country school was her first job followed by teaching in Calgary. Stella also aspired to move and teach in Uranium City, Sask. She met the love of her life Bill Shewchuk in Saskatoon and after they were married, they moved to Uranium City in 1966. Two daughters were born, Laura and Sherry, but unfortunately Sherry passed away in 1974 of Leukemia, bringing the family to Edmonton, AB. In 1979, they moved to St. Albert, AB where they remained. Stella's passion for teaching, especially kindergarten, did not end when she retired. She then volunteered with Star Literacy to help adults learn to read and better their English. During her retirement she also kept extremely busy volunteering in the community with the St. Albert Catholic Church, CWL, The Arden Theatre and other organizations. Bill and Stella grew more and more in love over the years and "the love birds" just celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary. Stella captured everyone's lives through her camera and then went on to document the Hryniuk family and Shewchuk family's genealogy. She will live in everyone's hearts through her love for teaching, taking care of others, caring for Bill and Laura and her hard work that leaves all the families she belonged to with extensive history books.

Janice was born, raised and lived her life in Edmonton.  She attended St. Margaret’s Elementary School and St. Mary’s Junior/Senior High School.  In her youth she played many sports, including basketball, volleyball, track and field and hockey.  As an adult she enjoyed bowling, volleyball, fastball, slow-pitch and soccer.

Janice started dating Michael in 1979 and they were married in 1981.  Together they built a house, filling it with love and four children.  Janice worked at Wawanesa Insurance starting in 1979 until 1991, when she embarked upon a new career as a stay-at-home mom.  The Cain children remember that their mom was always there for them starting in the very early years of their childhood.  Not long after her third child was born, Janice started up a day home to earn a little extra money for the growing family.  She took in a small number of neighbourhood children for a couple of years until the fourth child came along.

As the older children became responsible enough to help around the house, Janice found that she had a little more time to devote to herself.  She was constantly volunteering at the children’s school and even spent several years on the School Council.  Her time of volunteering at the school was recognized in 2007 when she was one of only two recipients that year in the Edmonton Catholic School District to be awarded the School Council Volunteer Award.  A proud achievement for someone who never asked for any recognition.

With Janice spending so much time in the children’s school, the principal approached her and asked if she would like to get paid for what she does.  So began her next career as a Special Needs Teacher Assistant.  She loved this role held from 2005 until her passing.  She made many friends during these years and loved the children that she was assigned.

One thing that Janice did for many years was scrapbooking and card making.   These crafts took over a good portion of the basement and while everyone else thought that her work area had been hit by a tornado, Janice knew exactly where everything was.  It was organized chaos!  Eventually, she became a founding member of Hand2Hand Artisan Society, which is a group of craftspeople that get together to organize two large markets every year showcasing local artisans wishing to sell their crafts.  Janice participated in every market selling her scrapbooks and cards.  She was never in it to make money, but did it for the fun and the fellowship.

Janice did a lot of camping with her family as a child and carried on the tradition with her own family.  Janice and Michael camped a lot over the years starting out in a small tent and working their way up to an RV.  Janice’s favourite camping spot was at Gallagher Lake, BC.  The family has spent the past 28 consecutive summers there including the summer of 2020.  There will be more summers spent there in the future, but they just won’t be the same.

There will never be enough time and space to give everyone a complete picture of Janice’s life.  She will always be known as the kindest soul who was strong, brave and gave the best hugs; who everyone loved and she loved back; who loved unconditionally; who always put others before herself, even when she was sick;  who always smiled at you, even if she didn’t know you yet; and who loved her family above all else.  She will truly be missed by everyone, because no matter how long you knew her, she changed your life for the better.

LARRY NOWAK

Larry Walter Nowak, beloved husband of Terry Nowak, of Cochrane, AB, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at the age of 70 years.

Larry was born in Wainwright, AB, on July 17, 1949.  He grew up in Edmonton and attended the University of Alberta where he met Terry. Upon completion of his Education Degree, he worked as a teacher and administrator with the Edmonton Catholic School Board until his retirement in 2004. Larry loved being both a teacher and coach throughout his career. He also had a passion for basketball. He began playing at O’Leary High School and was proud to represent the University as a Golden Bear for four years. His knowledge and skill of the game allowed him to be both a strong and fair official which he enjoyed for a number of years. Dad’s basketball community is one that he valued his entire life.  Upon retirement, Mom and Dad relocated to Creston, BC where Larry became an active, contributing member of this welcoming community. Their acreage at the base of the Skimmerhorns brought him great joy. Just shy of a year ago, Dad and Mom moved back to Alberta to be closer to family.

Larry’s first love and biggest pride was his family. After marrying Terry in 1972, they began their family welcoming Janet in 1974, and twins Darcy and Doug only eighteen months later. Dad was our champion and biggest fan.  His enormous pride in his children spilled over to his devotion and support of his beloved grandchildren Isaac, Asha, Logan, Otto, and Evie. Not only was Papa the tallest fan in the arena or concert hall, he was the proudest. In addition to loving and cherishing these children, Larry was a revered father-in-law to Marc and Scott.

He will be most remembered for being a genuinely good man with a huge heart, ready smile, and boundless pride.

Besides his loving wife Terry, Larry is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Marc Houle and Darcy and Scott Hanson; son Doug, grandchildren, Isaac and Logan Houle and Asha, Otto and Evie Hanson. Also left to mourn his loss are his nieces, Tracy and Cara McLeod. Larry was a respected and much loved member of Terry’s large family. Missing him are her eight brothers and sisters, their spouses, and his nineteen nieces and nephews from the Gwartney clan. Dad was considered family by many and his friends, both old and new, were dear to him.

A Celebration of Larry’s Life will be announced at a later date. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Larry’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com. KAREN MARTINOVIC

70659-Karen-Martinovic.png

It is with great sadness that we announce the untimely passing of Karen Elizabeth Martinovic (nee Dickie), aged 54, on June 28, 2020. She will be greatly missed for her kindness, passion for teaching and joy of life.

Karen is survived by her three loving children, Joshua Martinovic, Thomas
Martinovic, Sophia Martinovic; her former husband, Robert Martinovic; her mother, Marina Dickie; her brothers, Warren Dickie (Colleen Houlihan), Kevin Dickie (Melinda); as well as numerous relatives from western Canada and the U.S. She was predeceased by her father, William Dickie.

Karen was born in Victoria, B.C. on December 15, 1965. As an infant, she demonstrated a strong will which she benefitted from her entire life. As a child, she was enrolled in public school, participated in sports and attended evening catechism classes with her cousins. Karen was a natural leader which became useful once her two younger brothers grew older as she offered them advice, guidance and affection. As a student, she developed a love for all her subjects but especially enjoyed the sciences. After she graduated from Belmont Secondary School, she attended the University of Victoria and later graduated from British Columbia Institute of Technology. She started her first career with the Canadian Red Cross as a laboratory technician in Vancouver. She soon started a family and later gravitated towards teaching and moved with her small family to Edmonton and enrolled in the Education Program at the University of Alberta. With her strong will and tenacious work ethic, she graduated from the Faculty of Education Program with Honours and simultaneously raised her three small children and worked a part time job.

For the second time in her adult life, Karen embarked on a new career; this time as a teacher with Edmonton Catholic Schools. She began as an elementary teacher at Mary Hanley Catholic Elementary School and then continued her career as a teacher/learning coach at St. Elizabeth Seton, St. Kevin, St. Basil, St. Cecilia and finally and as an Assistant Principal at Christ the King Junior High School. Her career with Edmonton Catholic Schools spanned over 17 years. Karen was stellar in every way and much loved by her students and colleagues. She brought joy, enthusiasm and commitment to every assignment and was especially passionate about teaching students to read.

Karen was dedicated to her children first and foremost. She provided them with a tidy home, always had delicious food to eat and made sure her children knew that they were loved by their parents. Karen’s children had numerous friends and it was well known throughout their neighbourhood that at the Martinovic’s house, there was always room for one more at their table. She guided her children through life into adulthood where they all remain extremely close.

Ever loving and always giving, Karen sponsored children in some of the poorest countries in the world through World Vision International. She kept a photo of the sponsored child on her fridge as a reminder that she could make a difference in a child’s life that she had never met. We know that this act of kindness filled her heart with love. She enjoyed sports and spent countless nights and weekends attending her kid’s hockey, soccer and lacrosse games. Karen shared her home as a billet for international students and was looked upon by many of those students as their adopted Canadian mother. She found delight in music, singing and frequently attended concerts. Karen was well liked by many and enjoyed the companionship of her lifelong friends. She has a great sense of humor and always enjoyed a good laugh. She adored travel and spent time throughout Canada and internationally. Karen cherished family gatherings and often returned to BC to enjoy Christmas time with her family and friends. She embraced life with ambition, resilience, enthusiasm, magnanimity and dignity. She will forever be with those who loved her so dearly who have passed before her. Karen’s Catholic faith carried her through her final days and we know she is now in eternal peace with the Lord.

A private Funeral Mass will be celebrated on July 7th at 1:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will take place in Victoria, BC in September 2020.

Memorial donations in Karen’s memory may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation and World Vision International

JEAN KOSHKA

Early Monday morning, October 21, 2019, Jean Koshka passed away peacefully in her sleep. Jean died as she lived with an indomitable spirit and a take control attitude. She was determined to defeat the cancer that was ravaging her body. Her spirit was willing but her body just could not endure the fight any longer. When she was not travelling, Jean lived for family gatherings and nothing was more important to her than bringing family and friends together for her elaborate meals. She loved to entertain and everything was created and served according to true Ukrainian tradition.

When she wasn't hosting a major dinner, Jean spent most of her working life as the head secretary at Austin O'Brien Catholic High School in Edmonton where she directed and organized the lives of many, many principals and staff over the years. Jean was predeceased by her dear husband, Larry, in 2005. Jean is also survived by her brother, Roman Caruk (Maria); as well as many nieces and nephews.
